5 Reasons Why Having A Dog Is Healthy For You

I'm currently going through yet another breakup. I need to write and get some of my feelings out right now. Time and time again, my dog has been the best support system for me. Here's a list of 5 ways having a dog helps you.

1. They Understand Your Emotions

I currently live with my ex-boyfriend and it's a difficult time for me, and my dog knows it. I invite him to sit next to me on the couch and he crawls into my lap. (He's a 58lb dog so he doesn't FIT in my lap) He just knows I'm sad and wants to comfort me. There have been other times where I just sit on the floor and he will come and lay his head on my shoulder. He also doesn't give doggie kisses, but when he knows I'm upset, he will gently lick my hand.

They just want to make you happy.

2. They Give You A Reason To Keep On Going

A few years ago, I was diagnosed with type two bipolar disorder. I had just broken up with another boyfriend and I was alone. I had just started my medication. It was making my emotions worse before it could make them better. I didn't want to get off of my couch. I hadn't eaten in days and couldn't make myself socialize.

But I couldn't neglect my dog. He needed me to get up and feed him. He needed me to take him outside. He needed me to play with him and love him. I couldn't just give up. I had someone who depended on me. I had to keep on going.

3. They Get You Outside

Similar to "keep going," they also get you outside. The last thing I want to do when I'm sad is go outside. But I know that he needs to get his exercise and I need to get myself out of the apartment. Being outside in the sunshine, with the wind blowing on your face, and your happy dog, makes it impossible to be sad. He joy he feels getting to walk around and sniff everything just puts a huge smile on my face every time.

4. They Relieve Stress

I work at a job that allows us to bring our dogs to work. I don't usually bring my dog, because he can't sit still long enough for me to finish a project without interruption. But my coworkers dog is the PERFECT office dog! He curls up under her desk and naps all day long.

When I get frustrated or upset at work, I walk into her office and sit on the floor until her Golden Retriever comes over and lays his head in my lap. Anytime I feel myself getting worked up, I take a breath and just go pet Toby for a few minutes and that's all I need.

5. They Make You A Better Person

Owning a dog has so many benefits and helps you grow. He has taught me independence, responsibility, love, happiness, and so much more. My life has improved since I adopted my fur baby and I wouldn't trade him for ANYTHING.
